Public education. Every child deserves access to a high-quality education from preschool through high school, and beyond. Invest in attracting and retaining the highest quality teachers. Invest in first-rate infrastructure.
Student debt. Enable Arizonans with student debt to refinance their loans at the lowest rates. Allow borrowers with student loans to be able to discharge their debts in bankruptcy.
Economy. Arizona needs to build a full-employment economy . We need an economy where everyone has a job that pays enough to raise a family and live in dignity with a sense of purpose. Too many live paycheck to paycheck and struggle to own a home. Too many struggle with attempting to manage the cost of childcare and healthcare.
Healthcare. Healthcare is a right not a privilege. Our health care system must put people before profits. I’ll fight to protect and expand our Medicaid program. I’ll work to reign in drug prices in our state.
Women’s rights. I will vote to pass the Equal Rights Amendment. I will fight for equal pay. Every woman should have access to quality reproductive health care services, regardless of where she lives, how much money she makes, or how she is insured.
Voting rights. The right to vote is the core principle of our democracy and voter suppression in any form cannot be tolerated. Enact automatic voter registration for all eligible citizens.
Criminal justice reform. Incarcerating for profit is wrong. With less than five percent of the world’s population our country has almost a quarter of the world’s prison population. We must reform mandatory minimum sentences and end privatization of prisons and detention centers.
Campaign finance reform. We must fight to preserve the longest standing democracy in the world: a government that represents the people, not just powerful and wealthy special interests. We need to end unaccountable financing in politics by requiring disclosure and transparency.
Immigration. We must repair our immigration system. We must create a path to citizenship for families contributing to our communities. We must defend the Deferred Action for Childhood Act.
Environment and Water Management. Clean energy is the future and Arizona should be seizing the opportunity to lead. We need to aggressively invest in solar power and other renewable energy sources while moving away from dependence on fossil fuels. The Arizona Department of Environmental Quality must establish a greenhouse gas reduction plan. I support continued research to sustain our surface and ground water resources.
Responsible gun safety. Require background checks for every gun purchase. We need to revisit a ban on the sale of assault weapons. Allocate resources to The U.S. Center for Disease Control and Prevention to study gun violence.
A Phoenix area resident for over fifty years, Val and her husband Mike have four adult children also living in the valley. Following a rewarding 37 year career with American Express, Val retired and continues working for the betterment of our community while employed by the Deer Valley Unified School District. Val is deeply concerned about the state of the economy in Arizona. She sees her children, their peers, and many Arizonans struggling to find well-paying careers that will afford them the opportunity to own homes and start families, often while facing lengthy student loan debt.
Val is running for an Arizona State House seat in Legislative District 22 because she believes in our great state and citizens who are being denied wide opportunity for success because of the narrow vision of current state leadership. As one of the largest metropolitan areas in the nation we cannot rely of low wage service sector jobs for economic growth. We need broader vision to attract and retain high paying corporate employers who value long-term commitment to Arizona citizens..
I am running under Arizona Clean Elections rules which means my campaign is not funded by PACs or corporations.
